TL;DR

A mountainous village with a beautiful view of Ionio and the gulf of Kyparissia, and a bloody history of oppression.

Agaliani is a semi-mountainous village (400m) on the northwestern slopes of Vagiadas top, with a great view to Ionio and the gulf of Kyparissia. It has approximately 250 residents and it situated 67km northwest of Kalamata.

It is dated from the byzantine period, but it took its name during the Turkish rule (1715), when the vilayet (governor, in Turkish) of Arcadia appointed two Aghas to collect the taxes from Agaliani. In 1826, Ibrahim invaded the village and took many women and children that he then sold in the slave market (sklavopazaro) of Methoni – one of the biggest slave markets during the Turkish rule.
