TL;DR

A picturesque village built near the ruins of an ancient Greek and a medieval city, as well as caves used during the Greek Rebellion.

The village is located at an altitude of 600m and it is built amphitheatrically around the slope of the Gourtzios hill. It consists of two hamlets: Ano and Kato Spathari. Near them, there is Kallona spring and the ancient Greek city of Thelpousa, where the ruins are still visible as well as the traces of a medieval city.

The village was built around 1650 and its name comes from the byzantine title “Spatharios” (the one who holds the sword).  At the northwest you will find caves that were once a shelter for many fighters during the Turkish rule. More specifically, the families of both Kolokotronis and Deligiannis were hidden inside the Patralia cave.
