TL;DR

A village located at the far end of a dense black pine forest, with many fresh water springs and many sights.

The village of Velina is located on the northeastern part of Zireia mountain, at an altitude of 930m above sea level, built on the far end of a dense forest of black pines. The name of the village has Slavic origins, as “Velina” translates to 'polymorphous and verdant place'. It is located 23km away from Kiato, and its 250 (approximately) residents are mainly occupied with agriculture and animal husbandry. During the time of the Greek Revolution, Velina's residents played an important role in the Nation's fight. The village houses a particularly active cultural association, the members of which organize a 'tomato fest' (“Giorti tis tomatas”) every September. Starting from Velina, one can reach the picturesque chapel of Agia Triada (where a great festival is held), Trikala of Corinth, the lake Stymfalia, lake Doxa, and the military barracks of Zireia. The area has many fresh-water springs. The church of Agios Dimitrios is located in the village, between a tremendous plane tree, and an old water fountain. It has a remarkable iconostasis, and murals dating back to the 19th century.
