It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, although, not organized. A wide stretch of sand with crystal waters, albeit, cold as four small rivers from Mount Taygetos flow into it. Yet, it has an incredibly rich seabed which deepens smoothly.
Kalogria beach is renowned for inspiring Kazantzakis to write his masterpiece “Life and Times of Alexis Zorbas”. Nikos Kazantzakis, the famous author, used to rent a small cottage at one end of the beach. This is where Zorbas lived, the legendary hero of Kazantzakis. These two worked together for some time in the coal mines in Prastova. Kazantzakis was inspired by the peculiar character of this man, Zorbas, whose real name was Giorgos and not Alexis.
On the left tip of the beach there is a cave, called “Kazantzakis’cave”. The story goes that this is where the famous writer withdrew to write, inspired by this incredible landscape.
