The beautiful Varson monastery is only 11km from Tripolis built on the Ktenias mountain in a lush green landscape. Holy water springs from Bema (a platform which composes the sanctuary) to be distributed through fountains. So, the exterior spaces were arranged accordingly with flagstones and decorated with plants.
This stauropegic monastery was built in the 11th century and its catholicon is a cross-inscribed church decorated with magnificent frescoes inside and sculptures of an older monument outside. The relics of the New Martyr Dimitrios, as well as, part of the relics of the New Martyr Pavlos are kept in the monastery. There is a grand celebration in their honor on May 22. The monastery suffered many damages during the Ottoman empire, but its contribution to the Greek War of Independence was of great importance. It has mementos, records and a library.
