Situated east of Kalamata, on the slopes of Mount Kalathi west of Taygetos, Elaiohori village is built at an altitude of 520m near the ancient town of Kalamai with a spectacular view to Messiniakos Gulf. On Agioi Taxiarches hill a part of the ancient fortification of the 4th century was discovered in a good condition which was used to protect the acropolis from the village’s side; the other sides were steep, hence protected.
Near the village, in a cave in Dimiova, earthen idols were found dated from the early classical years (5th century BC). In the village you will also find the chapel of Aghioi Theodoroi (St. Theodoroi) dated from the 17th century and the monastery of Dimiova where there is a celebration on August 15th that attracts many visitors. Elaiohori is only 3km away from Kalamata and has approximately 110 residents.
