Marathopoli, also called Marathos, is a small sea-side village near Gargalianoi. It is a tourism-oriented settlement, since it is near beautiful beaches like Mati (Eye, in Greek), Vromoneri, and others. Its 30 kilometres from Kyparisia and 15 kilometres from Pylos, on the northern part of Messinia region.

During the summer, boats connect the village with a green isle that is near, named Proti (First). On it is the well-known monastery named Koimisis tis Theotokou Gorgopigis (Dormition of the Mother of God, of Gorgopigi).

The surrounding area offers many sights, being a central point for many visitors and vacationers. In the 6th of August, the village church hosts a celebration since it is dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The celebration features the burning of an effigy symbolising Judas, a common ritual in Orthodox Christianity.

The village has 640 residents, engaged mainly in the tourism industry, cultivating olives and viticulture. Marathopoli is well known for its wine and olive oil.
