Velies is at an altitude of 161m with approximately 500 residents. In Velies, you will find the cottage of the poet Giannis Ritsos, a beautiful mansion that has now become a guesthouse. It is a traditional village composed by Prophitis Elias and Agioi Saranta.
Next to a centenarian plane tree and an old fount you will find the Folklore Museum of Velies with home utensils, agricultural tools, old photos, embroideries, woven fabrics and local costumes. The church of Aghios Georgios (St. Georgios) with beautiful murals, dated from the 13th century, and the church of Panagia (Holy Mary) are some of the sights worth visiting in the village. Excavations in the area brought to light some ancient findings such as coins from the classical, Hellenistic and Roman times. The “Oinopoiitiki Monemvasias” is a local wine cellar that produces exceptional wine.
