On the northern part of the Messinia region, on the side of the Elaio mountain, built on an altitude of 525 metres, sits the Platania village. It is 61 kilometres away from Kalamata, and because of its height, it has an amazing view of the Gulf of Kyparissia. On the foot of the mountain is the castle of Eira, and near it is the river Nedonas.
The village has a small open-air theatre where, during the summer, plays and other cultural events are organised. Also noteworthy is the village's church, dedicated to Agia Eleni, and every year on the day of the celebration of the saint's name, a festival takes place on the village square.
