Built in the eastern part of the Messinian peninsula, on the foothills of Mount Lykodios and at an altitude of 480m, Mathia village has approximately 80 residents and it’s only 40km from Kalamata and 7km from the nearest coast. In the past, its name was Dragka and it was completely destroyed during the Turkish rule by Barbarossa’s pirates. The village is surrounded by green scenery with many traditional stone houses. Every year the village organizes the reenactment of the Vlach wedding, while during the Apokries (Carnival) the village celebrates in a traditional manner.
